Hi Everyone just after some advice. My other half is employed by a concrete fixing company and now and again there is sometimes no work and because of this they do not pay him a penny for that day. We can manage a 4 working day week but recently it has been quite bad because of the cold weather. So at the moment he has worked 6 days out of a possibly 17. What can we do ?! We have two children, mortgage, bills, food etc....he isnt the only person in this firm who is in the same boat so trying to find information for everyone.
I doubt we can get any sort of benefit.
I dont work - have a 9 month old baby and a toddler to look after. Childcare too expensive !
Any suggestion - apart from find a new job - welcome!
Thanks !

What does his employment contract say?
D70How about no longer being masochistic?
How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?0 -
I think you need to be careful about being seen to be finding out information for others in the firm. What if the firm doesn't like the info that you are finding out?
Do you doubt you will get benefits because normally over a year he would be well paid/ working overtime and you would earn too much?
Weather is likely to get warmer from reports I have seen today, so situation may get better? Time perhaps for a Statement of Affairs for handling your own finances?:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -

have you asked?
I assume he is self employed and you don't work?
you have 2 kids
I don't know the figures but ask on the benefit board,go on the entitled to site or simply contact http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/TaxCredits/index.htm0 -
Knowing that you can't lay concrete when its below a certain temperature and knowing what times of year that arrives, I'd be putting away money to cover the lean times.0

No he isnt self employed - 'he is employed by a concrete fixing company'
I dont work - I am still on maternity leave at the moment and not planning on going back because of childcare cost.
Some of your replies have somewhat confused me.....cover lean times - we are in lean times and have no extra cash to cover lean times....
We are very good at handling our own money - we are lucky we dont have debt and have a fairly small mortgage and dont live beyond our means....lucky really considering the situation at the moment.
Obviously the weather is warmer but building projects are behind. He gets paid a day rate not hourly so overtime doesnt even exist....
There is nothing in contract of employment regarding short time working.
I guess there is nothing we can do. Thanks for your advice0 -
There should be something in his contract about how many hours he is employed for.
It could be 40 or nil, but something should be there.
Ring the DWP up and see if they can help.
Could you get a job on an evening or a weekend to help out, pub, hotel, supermarket, McDonalds.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
