Advice from those getting married abroad

30 people is just what she has said she will be inviting, whether that many actually say they can go is totally unknown, she understands that a lot of people wont be able to go and she hasnt even mentioned a wedding abroad to anyone apart from me and her h2b but she was just weighing up her options. i just wanted to put feelers out for her to see if it was possible and where. she definately wants cyprus if she does do it, so if anyone can recommend anywhere in cyprus that would be brilliant!!0

In my opinion there is more chance of upsetting more people by choosing to marry abroad. £3k for a UK wedding and reception is very doable, I actually think that is the most frequent budget I've seen on here. But then I have never understood the argument "I want a small wedding (in either size or cost) therefore I must have a wedding abroad".0 -

Don't get me wrong - I'm all for getting married how you want to etc. And if the couple choose to do it aboard good on them. But I think wanting a 'small' one is a weak argument
Especially if they're then going to have a big party for everyone once they get back home.
(PS If I was to get married aboard - New York City would be my location of choice!)0 -

I see your point, but I'm not sure I agree. My best friend is marrying abroad, with just her and OH, parents, siblings, best man, and maid of honour (me). She wanted it to be just the people they cared about the most, and avoid the politics of inviting X but not Y, without upsetting Z. This way, everyone is equally offended, :rotfl:... but should come round in the end, rather than her upsetting 1 or 2 uninvited extended family members, causing lasting issues.0 -

But she could have done that in this country. When we marry there will only be our parents, siblings, and their children.
All I'm saying is the usual reason for marrying abroad generally doesn't automatically rule out a wedding here. It can be done, and I think rubymummy's friend should carry on exploring *all* the options rather than ruling it out.0 -
Hi
I think you need to take a look at MarryAbroad.co.uk. You can definitely get married for £3k abroad, they have weddings from $500 (wedding only), it will just depend on how many guests go really. The ceremony shouldn't cost much if you choose a basic package.
There are lots of choices, but to keep it cheap choose somewhere in Europe as the flights won't cost so much.
Hope that helps!0 -
Rubysmummy, we stayed at the Kefalos Beach Hotel, Paphos a few years ago and liked it. It hasn't got much of a beach, but then not many in Paphos do! My hubbies niece got married there and, though we didn't attend the wedding, the photos looked fab.
When we stayed there there were 3 weddings ranging in size from the B&G and their 2 kids, to a Scottish party of about 30 with all the men in kilts and gear, to a party of about 50 that had the ceremony on the beach with a gazebo and stuff - that one was lovely! The hotel has its own chapel that you can get married in I think.
There are lots of big hotels that will do these packages and have their own co-ordinators. Just google them.
Incidentally, we had 38 guests for our wedding in Lindos and a friend got 62 guests there! :OIf you have nothing constructive to say just move along.0 -
Thank you all for your comments, she is coming round tonight for dinner so i shall speak to her properly then about it all. because they are on a budget and she wants somewhere really nice they were looking into a wedding abroad, she has tried a few venues in Birmingham but the ones that are cheap she didnt like and the ones that were really nice didnt do a package like the £2012 as this would be perfect as if she were to have it here she would need 50 day time and then 100 night time. Ive explained to her the pros and cons about getting married abroad and at the minute it is just something they are looking into and see prices for so nothing is set in stone. Like i said before she wanted Cyprus originally but if somewhere else is cheaper then she wouldnt mind going there. i shall let you all know what she decides after i have seen her0
