Going off topic (sorry OP) there was a fantastic thread a while ago about odd substitutions. The best one I recall reading was somebody getting rubber gloves instead of condoms.

That's a great thread, reading through some of those the subs are unbelievable and the shoppers must just be taking the !!!!! I haven't seen any really silly ones myself, I always check before knocking on the door so I can explain to the customer and apologise if there is a stupid one there. I've had some which are a lot more expensive, but not radically different (lemons for washing up liquid).
It doesn't happen in our store because the shoppers know they will get slammed if they do it. I had one recently where a customer had ordered a bottle of wine which was £4. It was out of stock so the shopper had subbed it for a similar bottle which was £9. I had to apologise and explain that even I was stumped why they would sub it for something more than double the price. He rightfully refused it but did not write any comments on the paperwork so when I got back in the van I wrote down myself that the customer was rightfully unhappy at the sub, and the shopper got told off for it.0
