    However, there's still the kind of misunderstanding / mishearing as described above, which does still need to be responded to, IMO.

    A little tongue in cheek but...It's stupid question in the first place so you sometimes have to fight fire with fire. I agree with your interviewee - if your management can't sort out top level priorities then why should she?
