I think secondary schools look at the PiE and PiM (progress in english and progress in maths) scores or equivalent. If there is a discrepancy you will have a case. Ask the teachers. Any teacher worth their salt should be able to look at the PiE and PiM and see if a C2 is way off for that child.
Feel free to PM me with figures if you have PiE and PiM scores. I have a graph somewhere that I can use to tell you whereabouts your child is - although you may not want to know. A C2 should be enough to get them in somewhere decent.

    Good luck by the way!

I found this while looking for info regarding intake scores, might give you an idea of who takes what although obviously this years will be different.

It doesn't really help me as my son scored 96 and this would have given him his first choice every year but one. Too hard to predict!
  • I am seeking some advice as we have had a very hard weekend with our little girl who got a lower than expected AQE score.
She got 91 which was a shock to us all as she is extremely achademic and has a year of high scores practice papers behind her always staying top of the class.
She has wanted to follow her older sister into her grammar school as it has been amazing, but this result may put an end to it,which is heartbreaking to watch her confidence crumble before our eyes knowing she is more than capable of being an A student and being very happy there-they took 90 last year,96 the year before ad 90 the year before that,She will get added criteria as she has an older sister at the school already but that is all the criteria she qualifies for.
To make it worse we had a berevement at christmas and she had to cope with this while sitting the exams as it was the end of a terminal illness, now in my own grief i am worried that is why she scored lower than expected and i shouldve told someone she was having to deal with it....im really not looking for excuses,if she just did badly i would accept it,but it is just SO unexpected!
We have also heard mostly low scores too from other children low 80's for example and im wondering if that would indicate the scores overall are lower this year and perhaps that means the schools will lowers their intake scores?
Im just at a loss and feel so upset for our daughter that she is going to punish herself for 3 months now thinking she has failed but when,in reality, she has done so well by pushing herself for a year in preperation for 3 exams that i feel she shouldnt have had to sit and achieving a score that although lower than expected we are so proud of,shes a wonderful girl and we have always told her it was the trying her best that ment the most to us so she knows how proud we are of her.
Any ideas and info on possible lower score this year would be most helpful, thank you.

See info and links at bottom half of this page:

    http://www.aqe.org.uk/9.%20CEA,%20Special%20Circumstances.html

As far as I know, AQE did not require intention of possibly applying for Special Circumstances, to be notified by a date in December (unlike PPTC/GLAssessment), so you are not too late. You must, however, complete the form and provide all evidence in time for it to be attached to and submitted with your choice of school form. The primary are obliged to provide you with the necessary academic proof that you will then use. Check the exact criteria for Special Circumstances in respect of each school you are applying for as it can vary and you would need to cover all eventualities in the form and in the evidence being submitted.

  • I just called the AQE office. Top score this year was 126, lowest mid 20's [didn't know that was possible].
  • Hi your head should be able to give you the special circumstances form, he fills his part in along with how your child has preformed through out key stage 2 and any other information required ( doctors łetter etc ) it then gets sent to the grammer school. Good luck :)
  • thank you all for your replies,i have spoken to our headmaster (who is very supportive thank goodness) and he is putting everything in place for us tomorrow,i just have to contact our GP to get a letter confirming the illness and stress and then the Head will send it all off for us.
I hope it all works out for the best, they are so young to go through all this!
    thank you all x

  • This is all very confusing.........I checked with some friends today whose kids sat the GL last year and DD has scored higher than most in her raw scores but her standardised score is lower. Go figure.
I have given myself a darn headache trying to figure this out.

Hopefully the info at the following will help you understand why there are such differences from Raw to Standardised:

    http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/advice/standardised-scores-an-explanation

    or

    http://www.nfer.ac.uk/nfer/research/assessment/eleven-plus/age-standardisation.cfm

    basically, though,
An older pupil may in fact gain a higher raw score than a younger pupil, but have a lower standardised score. This is because the older pupil is being compared with other older pupils in the reference group and has a lower performance relative to his or her own age group.
