They certainly are not allowed to deduct for something they have claimed as a taxable expense !

Calling in 5 hours prior to a shift also seems unreasonable. I start work at 8.30am, I'd have to call in at 3.30am to advise my boss I'd be absent, now I'd be asleep and perhaps not even realising I'd be unable to come in at that stage! I appreciate it is hard to find cover, but thats why you have agencies that can provide top up cover or people on casual contracts!!

I am interested in this, as I hear deductions all the time in my industry.

If a till is down, or someone breaks something, or loses their name badge say, are companies allowed to deduct pay - assuming the charge would not take anyone under minimum wage?
Only if the employee has agreed to it. Signing a contract with a clause saying that the employer can make deductions for specific events is permitted. If there is no mention of charges for name badges in the contract then no deduction can be made. An employee handbook forms part of a contract so it may also be mentioned in there.

Why would you not know? Sick pay is different. If you call in sick an hour before your shift starts you would still be expected to be paid for the day. This is about unpaid unauthorized days off.

You might, but many people these days know that sickness absence means no pay (except for SSP after 3 days) for them.
