Agency Confidentiality

I've seen a job advertised with an agency that I would like to apply for.

However I got my present job through the same agency a couple of years ago and I know that the agency have been in contact with my employer recently regarding a position that needed filling

So am I running a risk in the agency telling my employer that I've applied for another job ?

In my experience all decent agencies are very switched on about confidentiality. If it were me I'd first consider if I felt them to be a reputable agency. If so, I'd be tempted to contact the agency, but start off by explaining my concerns without being specific, and asking for their assurances. At this point you've not actually told them you are looking to move job. If they favourably convince you, you could then talk about the specifics.

If it is a large agency you could check out their website, as they normally will put their data sharing and privacy policies on there.

(just obviously make extra sure that if there is a box on the application form that says 'may we circulate your application to other relevant employers registered with us' you say no!)
  • It is not in their interests for them to tell. You are really their perfect candidate, someone they know they can place and who sticks with the company (a selling point to the potential employer) and coming from somewhere that they are on the PSL for so (1) they know the job is coming and so get onto it first and (2) knowing you have a reasonable idea of what they are looking at.

In their minds they have the potential of two relatively easy commissions coming which they are unlikely to threaten by grassing you up.

Why not? (Aside from it being bad practise)
  • When i worked in recruitment one manager did this as standard as a way of fostering relationships with the manager at the company he was dealing with. Most however did not. Personally i disagreed as i felt it showed a lack of integrity do didn't achieve any aim, although it definitely does happen.

Sometimes also the agency will suggest the employee is unhappy due to lack of progression/pay rise/training etc if they get wind of it, as a way of showing they offer a service to the company well after finding the member of staff
  • Agencies contact companies specing for roles that they might have.

I would say that they should be discreet, if you think about if they call you while at work they will ask if you are able to talk.
