I have fallen in love with this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110485011818?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp4712.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3D110485011818%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1
But, it seems quite expensive for what it is. I was hoping to find a plain box in a similar style and decorate it myself, I'm not having any luck whatsoever
If anyone has any ideas / suggestions, I would be very grateful

Hi Missminx,
That looks as though it could be reasonably simple. If I were you, I would use a wine box (snaffled from nearest supermarket)
1) Take a wine box and place on it's side (so that the largest part of the box is the top)
2) Use another sheet of card to create your dome over the box. Tape it along one edge, bend it over the top and secure the other edge. Duct tape may be best for this
3) Use a sharp knife/scissors to cut the slit for the cards
4) Cover with tissue paper and a mixture of pva glue and water. I'd probably do 3/4 coats to get it nice and strong. Leave it to dry between each coat
5) Paint it with a thick paint (again helps with strength) and decorate with ribbon of your choice
Does that make any sense? Sorry if it's not clear, my brain is mush today.0 -
We used this. I decorated it to match our theme

we just got someone in the family to take charge of our cards, you really don't need to spend money on a box to put them in. every so often the cards would be taken up to our room and stored there.0

Somewhere on this forum last year a poster said the next day after the wedding they asked the bestman for the chest. He didnt have it. It turned out a member of the bar staff (or suchlike) took it
Do not know how it was found, will try and find the thread.
Not saying its a regular occurance but how shocking:mad:Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
For our wedding the receiption staff looked after our cards, we got married in the UK but off the mainland so had to consider what was practical to carry on flights etc.
However, the chest is lovely - I am sure you could make your own but weigh up the cost of paint, and decorations etc and consider if it would really be cheaper to make your own (plus, do you have time with other arrangements and apppointments etc?) Is there anything on your list where you could perhaps save money to the value of the chest and order the one you've seen? Or perhaps sell something on eBay etc to cover the cost of the chest?Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

We had one similar to the link picklepick has posted. I decorated it myself and it was really handy, we placed it on the table alongside the eating plan and guest book - lots of people commented on how handy it was.
Tbh, at £20 for the chest I don't think it's too expensive as it looks lovely, and it can double up as your wedding 'memory box' afterwards (that's what mine is still used for)
However have you looked at the cheaper one? You may have flowers and ribbon left over from other wedding prep which you could use to decorate it with
