Sounds very interesting! How did you get started? Are there companies that you sign up to?:)0 -
How did you find out about the 1:1 in schools?? I have signed up for home tutoring, but that's just going to be a waiting game as my subject isn't a core subject so I imagine the desire for extra tutition is limited.
I really enjoy crafting and have begun trying to sell some of my things, but this is really just beginning and I can't see it making a significant amount - maybe pay for tea and cake outings!! What was the business you set up??
I am signed up to some mystery shopping companies, and intend to add to them. Havent done any assignments yet, but may give them a go if any crop up! Although I've heard people complaining about the paper work, I imagine it'll be a doddle to us teacher types
How did you find going back into teaching after 4 years?? I do want to keep involved as I love teaching. I just can't afford for it to rule my life like it previously has!
Thanks for you lengthy response - really useful!
I found out about 1:1 when head rung me to ask if I knew about it and would I like to do it!
Seems the 1:1 programme has now stopped, but schools are still advertising for 1:1 teachers - I've seen a couple of adverts in my county for them. Quick google brought this up

Maybe someone is still doing training somewhere, or worth contacting local schools when you're ready to return to work asking if they still want them? Are you primary or secondary BTW? I'm primary, so it was easy to do 1:1 maths tuition for me, though if you're a secondary Art teacher I guess 1:1 literacy is not a viable option.
Business was what my ebay business is now, so I'd rather not say. Best advise in that area is to find a good wholesaler in an area you're knowledgable about, and do some price comparisons.
Mystery shopping is a doddle IMO - being observant and a detail person is what is needed. Paperwork can be repetative with some companies and it is dull to fill in, but a necessary part of the job. I used it more as treats I'd never get otherwise rather than a wage.
I last had my own class in July 2004, I had my own class again Sept 2011, so 7 years out of proper teaching. 1 day a week and 1:1 tuition I didn't consider proper teaching as it was solely the best bit of the job - working with the kids! No planning, minimum prep and got to leave school at a decent hour.
Having gone back to having my own class, I can truly say I still love the job. Like riding a bike, you don't forget. The only thing that has changed is the initials of all the stuff I was doing anyway (APP, AFA...) oh, and 1 afternoon a week PPA. Never had that before and I use it to my full advantage - hardly take anything home with me as being a mum, and doing 3 jobs with the ebay, 1:1 and mystery shopping, has really honed my organisational skills.

Yep... I started off on http://www.modelreg.co.uk/ Once you have a portfolio, the main one is http://www.modelmayhem.com/ and you can get a lot of work by creating yourself a (separate) profile on Facebook to connect with artists.
I have to admit that I rather like having my copies of the pictures, too. I have one that looks just like the iconic scene from Titanic and I have a set a photographs of myself looking quirky in bright red lipstick with fairy lights in my hair! When I'm old and grey I'll look proudly back at those
I think there's a thread with more info on the 'Up your income' board - as always the best place to start
