Clydesdale Con?

I have read your articles on bank charges and I thought this would apply to my situation but as it turns out, I am not so sure?
I am currently doing a course in pc engineering and when I signed up for the course I was financed by Clydesdale as it turns out it's not the bank as I first thought but a finance company who have nothing what so ever to do with the well known bank.
In fact, the bank has never heard of this finance company!
When I unfortunately became unemployed, I had to stop direct debit payments and was assisted by my partner every month giving him the cash thus allowing me to use his debit card for payments.
When I called Clydesdale, I was informed that as long as I phone in payments no later than the 10th of each month all would be ok with payment times.
My course is now about to come to an end and I called Clydesdale to confirm (my thinking) that the last payment was due in march, and to my horror was informed that they have charged me over £450 for 20 late payments on top of the £150 pounds I have left to pay.
I had received around 3-4 letters of late payment but when I called I was told to ignore them as they had crossed with the timing of payment.
Not only have they given me these charges they have taken it upon themselves to place an extension on the repayment terms, and I have signed nothing in agreement to such terms.
I have struggled through unemployment to pay for this course.
When I did find full-time employment things were and still are a struggle, so I am desperately hoping you can give me some advice on where I stand.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.
Yours Sincerely
