Taking on another job?

Just a quick question that hopefully someone can help me with.

Is your current employer allowed to stop you get a second job?

Guess it depends on your contract, mine states that my employer has to approve any second job to ensure (a) there is no conflict of interest and (b) the hours won't affect my performance at work, but provided that neither condition is met then permission will be granted.

I know several people with approved second jobs, mostly weekend work - one bloke is a sailing instructor, another does weekend bar work, and a third runs some kind of ebay business. But the bloke doing bar work got refused a weekday evening shift on the grounds that working 8-5 then a second job from 6-midnight would just leave him too knackered to work well the next day

edit: i'd imagine it depends a lot if you're full-time or part-time too, if you're doing 20 hours a week I don't think there would be many grounds other than direct conflict of interest for refusing another part-time job
