How long do toiletries last??

I have discovered a cache of unopened shampoos, body lotions and conditioners in a box in my cellar. They are left-over from when we moved to this house 14 years ago. Will they be OK to use?

So they are 14years old?

Not sure if they are usable but there was a shop on the news they pulled some boards down and found boxes of shreddies from 1970 or something then sold them (not to eat) for a fortune. x

I know it's not quite as long as 14 years, but I'm using stuff I bought back in 2004. My thinking is that if it looks and smells alright then I'll use it.

I'm not sure I would use something that is 14 years old! I certainly wouldn't want them getting in my eyes etc.

I do think the best before dates on most toiletries are ridiculous. If the product looks and smells exactly like it did new I will use it.

I would use the shampoo and conditioner, as they are only on my scalp for a minute (conditioner only on the ends of my hair) and then washed away. Anything that's absorbed by the skin - no way.

Smell them first to be sure.

I will say most have separated especially body lotion and conditioner.

    Wouldn't chance it.

I've asked this question on Colin's Beauty Pages (he's a cosmetic scientist) and the answer is a definate NO.

Products are tested to last for 3 years. Very occasionally 5 years. Colin says to use old shampoo for washing the car! Otherwise throw away out-of-date lotions and creams.
