My employer hasn't paid me, £100 but I still feel annoyed

I delivered some leaflets a couple of months ago for a self employed joiner and hes still not paid. I phoned him twice, first time said he had been out of the country, and have just phoned him today and he said he transferred the money a few weeks ago but hes definitely not, and the tone in his voice, I could detect him lieing I think. He said he will get back to me which I don't he will.
He is a nice enough guy, but he is taking me for a joke. Any advice would be great anyone

Do you have any written prooof that he was meant to pay you?
You can pursue through small claims I should think but if this is just a word of mouth thing it may be a sticky wicket.
Nevertheless, you can make it known to him (am avoiding the word threat) that this is this course of action you will take - the onus should be on him to prove that he HAS paid you, not the other way around.0 -

No written proof, nothing.
How long should I give him do you think? I was hoping to get paid before Christmas. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I would say NO longer - but this depends on the actions you have taken so far. In truth, you should not have had to make no more than one call, so any more than this is too much on your behalf.
I would make one more call - record it if you can (as in try to get him to admit that he owes you money or offer evidence to you from his end that he has paid it to you).
Tell him (if he is sounding dodgy) you will follow up in writing; then do so, by recorded delivery and take a copy, giving him a 7 ?(up to you) - day deadline.
Nothing after this, other than setting Small Claims in motion - and you can then advise him that you have done so (if you like and possibly allowing him to pay up....) - and look into if you can add the cost of taking him to Small Claims to the claim that you are making.

Send a Letter Before Action (there's a template here, although they call it Letter Before Claim http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/making-a-complaint/taking-a-dispute-to-the-small-claims-court/sample-letter/)
You shouldn't send it by a signed-for method as they can refuse to accept it, instead send it from two different post offices and get proof of posting receipts, the court (if it gets that far) will take this as evidence that it will have been correctly delivered.
Hopefully this will work but if he still doesn't pay the Small Claims procedure is here https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/web/mcol/welcome
However, if you have nothing in writing it will be your word against his and you'd have to weigh up whether it's worth doing for £100.
