How do you cook French Yam?

I love trying different types of food but sometimes I got stuck! Bought this French Yam but have no idea how to prepare it.

Any advice? Thanks!

    Anyone?

    Thanks in advance!
  • Try entering yam in the recipe finder on bbc:

    www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes

    A few suggestions appear.

    Thanks for the link.

I could not find any recipe of French Yam. Perhaps French Yam is the same as Yam?

I think those recipes mean the small yams that are also called sweet potato, French yam is different. I found a Jamaican recipe for pumpkin soup with French yam in it. That recipe has ordinary white potato as a substitute for French yam so I guess you can use it in a similar way.

Did you buy a whole one? I think people normally get the greengrocer to cut them a piece. Not too useful in this particular instance but next time you buy an ingredient you haven't used before why don't you try and pluck up the courage to ask the grocer about it? Being able to do that is one of the advantages of local greengrocers over supermarkets.

    Hi Kittiwoz,

Yes I bought the whole one. I thought it would taste the same as the yam I had when I visited Thailand last year so I did not ask the grocery how to prepare it.

I cooked a small section by cooking it with rice (just like what I had when I was in Thailand) but it was not as nice. The yam I tasted in Thailand was a bit more flavoury and a bit sweet, but the french yam has no taste at all.
