I have to say that I love watching cookery shows & it was the lovely Jamie Olivers books that taught me to cook! (back in 2003!). A lot of the food programmes do use expensive ingredients bug people likd Hugh, Jamie & Nigel all encourage the use of seasonal ingredients. Thats been my biggest moneysaving godsend :0)
    First home- Oct’16 until June’21: £170.995- Overpayments made £13,784 (25% extra!).
New forever home- Sep’21 £309,449 @ 2.05%. Plan to clear it before 30 years!!!!!!

I bought a French cookery book called "I know how to cook" and aside from truffles (I think I could get away with using a drop of truffle oil) most of the recipes have four or five everyday ingredients. Simple selection of herbs you could grow in a window box. There are lots of recipes using "cooked" (leftover) meat.
I've made some luxurious tasting food for very little money using that book. Some arrangement of time has been needed for marinating and setting but that's about all. It's an expensive and huge book but worth every penny.

If you could spare the time to type them up, I'd love to have the details of that cookbook (author, full title, etc). Sounds fascinating. Many thanks.

(Doesn't matter to me if it's in French. No better way to learn a language than trying to decypher a recipe or a knitting/sewing pattern.)

It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it - that’s what gets results!

Thank you. I've added it to my Amazon shopping cart as a "saved for later".

Thanks for that debbym I've had a look at her blog, could spend hours on there just catching up! She always gave such good sensible recipes and budget advice. Just what we need now actually!

I think a lot of them are,the only good ones are Floyd when he did India,Steins Seafood lovers Guide & River Cottage Meat (was that a programme) for instance Heston showd you how to make 'the perfect chip'...How many of us have the time to first boil the chips, then put them in the freezer for an hour ect. While all of his recipies the other night looked good,in reality, how many of us would have the time & patience to do them?

Just been reading through this thread and this above reminded me of when I worked at a local Wimpey burger bar as a Saturday girl (this was 40+ years ago and pre-McDonalds:D), the chef pre-cooked his chips in the morning and left them open to the elements in a tray under the deep fat fryer for when the lunch time rush came in. They were the best tasting chips ever!

I pre-boil my roasts potatoes and chips for about 3-5 mins, drain and shake before oven cooking them. They get a really crispy outside and don't take that long to roast. Yummy!

Years ago, cooking was proper work.... now everything's "put it all in the processor, whizz, pour, done" - even pastry is made in them!!

    I'll get one one day.
