Discharged Bankrupt - Proof Needed

A year ago, on 11th Feb, I was declared bankrupt. As I will be classed as 'discharged' in a few days, will I get a letter to confirm this? I have been asked by my local council to provide proof of discharge of bankruptcy when I have it as this will 'write off' an old housing benefit overpayment debt that I have been paying weekly instalments on. Will I get discharge confirmation via post or do Ineed to contact anyone ? Any advice appreciated..

  • You need to obtain a Certificate of Discharge which you get from your local Court. It cost me £65 and they gave me half a dozen I seem to remember. Absolute rip off, but there's no other way! They are handy to have as Banks etc will need to see the Certificate.

You can print off your entry on the IS website (it will disapear after 3 months so make sure you get a few copies) when it changes to discharged.

You can ask your OR for a letter to say you are discharged, some will do this for free and some will charge around £25ish.

Or as Wheelie says you can apply to the court for a certicate for £70. If you are on certain benefits you may get this free.

I would start with the print out of the IS website and if they won't except that go for a letter from your OR and then the certificate.

When you are discharged then give it a couple of months and then do the Credit Reference Fiel Clean Up as per the sticky.
