I used to think people were crazy clearing the snow off their drives until November/December the year before last. I'd just left it as usual and let it compact down as we drove the cars over it, thinking it'll warm up and it'll just go naturally. Unfortunately, we ended with that much snowfall that the compacted stuff turned to a 4 inch thick ice sheet complete with ruts and pot holes. Our cars refused to go over it and we had no choice but to attack it with garden spades. It took quite a few of hours of back breaking work to clear it to a reasonable level. I've been a fan of clearing the stuff when it arrives since then.0 -

One of my neighbours always cleared her drive after a snowfall, I used to think she was nuts and just left our drive, but like you found it set into and ice rink and was really hard to remove. A few years ago I started clearing the drive just like my neighbour, fresh snow is so easy to move and no sliding on the drive. I also clear a good length of the close too as I live on a windy bit of close on a slope so cars get stuck with very little snow and there was always concern will I be able to get up the hill or not. Snow last saturday night, out with the shovel on Sunday morning and no concerns all week - even better other people were out further up the close clearing almost to the main road, every bit where we're had any issues in the past was cleared (and the bit inbetween too). 12-15 og us had a great laught clearing the road and we all benefitted0 -
