ESC 19 P 800 underpayment help please!

Hi all!

there has been a lot of posting about this sort of problem on here however i think theyre all individual cases anyway so my dilemma - if i request anyone help- is this:

I recieved a letter from HMR stating i owe £579.46 for the year 2007/2008 - in this year I had two jobs (one which I have held since 2006 and one since 2003) both had the right tax codes arccording to the P60's.

Alongside this letter I also recieved a P800 for 2010/2011 which stated that I overpaid tax by £359 (?!?!?1 how does that make sense) anyway after this deduction the final amount I owe HMR is £341.66.

Am totaly astounted that I owe them any money as in 2010 I actualy recieved a rebate for £869.60 which must mean that my previous years were already re-assesed.

So after all of this I was pretty annoyed as you may expect and had a little look around the internet and stumbled on (ESC) A19, i subsequently thought that due to the fact that they had all my details as well as the fact that my assessments must have been looked at once before I believe that it is their own fault and wrote to them.

I have since recieved a rejection letter  and am now debating what action to take next.. which is where I could do with some help.. should I appeal? if so what would I say?... should I include copied of all the letters?

any help would be appreciated guys! :) Thanks!

First of all have you had a calculation of the years in question from HMRC? If so, do they make sense? If you post up the details on here we can at least let you know if their abacus was working on that day, as they make a frighteningly high proportion of clangers and schoolboy errors, in some cases in my view they more or less just make up the numbers.

So the first step is to see if they have made 2 plus 2 equal 4 or 5,7, 1000 or some other random number. If they've managed to make 2 plus 2 equal 4, Esc A19 for 2007-8 or some of the other tactics on here which have worked - see posts by myself and / or Pennywise for many of these - should work for you as well.

Basic common sense should tell these numpties that writing to somone in 2012 about 2007-08 tax is bang out of order. The UK tax system is in a real mess. I've been dealing with HMRC since 1990 and it 's never been worse. I know people who go back further - in one case to 1971 - and it's never been worse for any of them.

Look at those other threads and you should gain much comfort. Is there anything in your rejection letter which shows someone has read your letter? (For example, amounts unique to you, tax references or circumstances in the body of the letter unique to you.)

No? Thought not. Most probably they've just seen "Esc A19" and the knee-jerk "Let's knock out the box standard rejection letter." So keep writing your letters until at the very least you are totally confident someone in HMRC has bothered to read one of them.

  • Thanks for your answer there! Really appreciate it! It appear that most of the calculations are correct although... I will confirm this when I get in later.. just wanted to quickly say thanks for replying! and I shall have a browse through your posts later..!

Would you reccomend pushing it back to them again then for sure?
