It depends what you have tried...what about Aveeno (I used to be prescribed Aveeno when I had dry, scaly skin as a child from the doctor)...Eucerin dry skin relief is also really rich and thick for ultra dry skin.

Other ones I have found are body shop shea body butter, Rituals body lotion and Palmers Cocoa Butter. If your skin is terribly dry you could try applying cream everywhere 3 times a day until it becomes less dry and then reduce it to once or twice when your skin feels better.

Another important thing is to exfoliate once a week (you can buy mitts to use with any old shower gel or a body scrub). Also try using oilatum bath oil which keeps the moisture in when bathing or oilatum soap when showering...sometimes body cream alone is not enough as washing in hot water can strip the oil from your skin. Best of luck!

It might sound a bit strange but have you tried a natural oil, like olive oil? I have seen it recommended on simple living blogs as a moisturiser.

Or, if you don't want to risk smelling like a mediterranean deli :rotfl: you could try one of the Holland and Barrett oils, - I think they do an unfragranced almond massage oil for about a fiver.

Almond oil is also good :D

Another thing that was recommended to me when I had dry skin was to use body cream immediately after showering while the skin was still damp. The whole point of moisturiser is to act as a seal to keep water in so doing this means extra water is kept sealed in the skin
  • Bio-oil is good. I recently bought some 1/2 price from my local chemist, as a bit pricey otherwise. Amazon have got on special at the moment. I haven't had long, but is working wonders.

    Oh well...

  • Aveeno is a wonder moisturising lotion. Well recommended. I bought the one with shea butter & it's amazing.

  • Its all trial and error! I have had eczema for 25 years, nothing has worked so far apart from phototherapy which I'm not allowed all the time :)

Have you tried Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter as discussed in this thread? https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3779405

It's very rich, inexpensive and also has glowing reviews on the Ocado website http://www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Baby-Bottom-Butter-Waitrose/27923011
  • I've posted what was my cure for very, very dry skin elsewhere - I think people might be getting fed up with me saying it! Last year I got a mysterious flu, then broke out in hives - from then on my skin went totally beserk. I couldn't wear anything remotely contricting - my skin was dry and tight and sooo itchy and scaly, I was going nuts and having to live in baggy cotton clothes.

I stopped using all shower gels and bubble bath, then slowly started using Dove extra care soap, even then I used only on certain areas where you really need to freshen up daily. I can't tell you what a difference it has made - a couple times I have been tempted back into using my favourite delicious smelling shower gels but the dry skin returns with a vegence - so now I stick to judicious application of rather old fashioned soap. My skin has gone from needing thrice daily applications of rich moisteriser to stay sane - to where now I can just slap on some body lotion every now and then.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

Bunberry thank you for those links, unfortunately Ocado don't deliver to where I live.........but I will try and get to a Waitrose shop when I can.

  • I've found aqueous cream works well, and it's also really cheap!
The trick for me is to moisturise throughout the day so there's no chance for the skin to dry out, plus it's really important to moisturise after the skin gets wet, like after bath/shower and hand washing etc
