    ^^^ what DVardy said :)

Also remember once the payday loan and car are back on track you can start over paying to the mortgage arrears when you can. Just because you agree £80 extra now doesn't mean you can't add £200 in 3 months time etc.

You still might benefit from posting an SOA on the board, people here can spot a way to save on bills a mile off.

  • Thanks so much everyone. You know it has dawned on me after reading what you guys have said - I was agreeing to repay too much. If I had agreed to £200 a month extra it would all have been paid by now. Today arrived a letter from UDS - I have broken a previuos agreement with them too because they keep forcing me to pay too much. I offered £50 a month until I get back on tarck and then I can pay it all off in probably 2 - 3 months but they said no. They were really unhelpful and rude so now I dont knwo what to do. When they say they the minumum we can accept it x amount how do I know if thats true or if they are just putting pressure on ? Sorry to keep banging on but I feel I need the know how before I phone them. Thanks.,

There is your problem. You are phoning them. They can pressurise you in all kinds of ways over the phone which they would never dare put in writing.

By writing [and keeping copies], you slow the whole process down. And you can show you made a promise and you stuck to it.

And by not speaking to them on the phone, they cannot bully you into borrowing from relatives or taking payday loans. Obviously, you have not told us you were pressured into taking payday loans, but I can imagine collections departments doing this sort of thing. It is of course folly for a lender to pressurise to the extent that account holders in arrears go and take payday loans, because if someone is that close to the edge that they are in mortgage arrears, a couple of payday loans could be enough to ensure that an account that would have scraped along in arrears for a few months and then come right would actually go into default and be irrecoverable short of a repo.

But if the collections department meet their targets for bullying cash out of customers, in modern business, they are heroes. even if in reality they are pushing even more accounts into default and breakdown a little bit further down the line.

You cannot trust these companies to do the sensible thing even to look after their own longer term interests beyond the next 8 weeks. So you have to look after your own interests - don't speak to them on the phone - don't promise repayments you cannot afford.

  • DVardysShadow thatnks very much. You are so right. I am going to phone them to tell them I am sending them a letter and go from there. I do want to pay it back and as quick as possible but I don't have enough money to pay everyone in full straight away and they just dont want to listen.
I found the mortgage and car people ( to a lesser degree) quite helpful but UDS are just horrid. They keep repeating themselves that they cant accept such a low offer but I dont know who says they cant ! where is that written exactly ! anyway thanks for the support and hopefully I will be over all this in a few months.

And your Statement of Affairs justifies the offer and shows numerically how you are going to deal with the various debts. You need to start putting one together and here's the calculator

  • Thanks I will give it a go. I just think UDS are really nasty. Yes they are doing a job but not everyone who doenst pay up immediatly is trying to avoid paying and thats where they lack compassion. They are just bullies.

    D'oh!

You would do better to send them a letter telling them you won't deal with them on the phone. :p

Seriously, don't even phone. Just write while you have a clear head and don't give them another opportunity to bully you. Or if you really cannot stop yourself phoning come back here and get your head cleared [again] before you write.

    DVS is right.

First rule of creditors; do nto phone them.

In fact, much better to insist that they take your phone number off their records.
