Harry Potter themed Birthday Party - ideas?

Hi, my daughter is set on the idea of the Harry Potter party for her 8th Bday.
It's not till June but I thought I should start preparing early.
Has anyone done one of these before? I'm looking for ideas for party games and possibly links to where buy cheap Harry Potter paper plates, decorations, etc.
Any help is much appreciated

lots of ideas on here http://www.birthdaypartyideas.com/html/harry_potter.html
One of the women's magazines a few years ago had a small pull-out cookery pamphlet on 'Potter' foods - the only thing I can remember was fruit leather strips cut along the length to make fringing then wound around the bottom of stick pretzels to make broomsticks - or you could use matchmakers0 -
what about checking Ebay or somewhere similar for little cauldrons like kids use at Halloween and have them instead of party bags?
They drink pumpkin juice at Hogwarts, so is that available? Or orange juice and just say it's pumpkin?
Jelly beans - they're quite popular in the books. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Harry-Potter-Candy-Bertie-Botts/dp/B002Q67W02/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328639757&sr=8-1 found these ones
You can get the chocolate frogs too, but how about those Freddo chocs? They're about 10-15p each.
Do you know anyone who can do magic who could entertain the children??
Gameswise, I'm struggling. But you could split them into the houses by using your own sorting hat. Then have team games.

I'd imagine the chocolate frogs will go down well Also, here is a recipe for butterbeer. As for games - Pass the Golden Snitch? Wrap a small golden ball (with wings) up in layers of paper and play like pass the parcel. When the Potter theme music stops, a layer of paper is taken off and the winner gets a Quidditch cup (perhaps full of sweeties)?
For a food thing with a little creativity you could turn Mini Babybel into Golden snitches or use chicken nuggets.
Hope that helps a bit

I did a HP party for my daughter's 10th - she is turning 18 this year -shriek! We sorted the kiddies into hufflepuff and ravenclaw - noone wants to be Slytherin and everyone wants Gryffindor so it seemed fairer. I was McGonagle and anyone misbehaving lost 'Housepoints'. It was the best behaved party Ive ever hosted!! Points were also awarded for winning games and things like politeness, helpfulness and initiative. I'm trying to remember details. I made them house badges by downloading pics of the crests and colouring them on card and putting safety pins on the back. We ate 'a banquet' with chicken drumsticks, mini sausages, hunks of bread, cheese, cakes and jellies and I just renamed some drinks - Hagrid's special cyder' (appleade) etc. We did a HP themed treasure hunt with the same numer of clues hidden for each team which involved much clattering round the house until one team found the treasure. We had Hermione's quiz (what's the name of Neville's toad etc) (Trevor btw), Pass the parcel - (play the H.Potter music in the background and have a themed central prize), any normal party game you like but 'Potter it up. We even had a sign in the bathroom on the toiletries saying 'Potions - do not touch by order of Severus Snape' It was a hoot, took me a long time to think of all the ideas but costs very little. Hope this helps, I'll keep trying to remember.0

Oh, wow. Some brilliant ideas, thank you very much everybody!!!
I'd better start getting organised. Keep the ideas coming and I'll try and keep everyone updated on my progress.
Thanks again0 -
My son had a Harry Potter 'party' for his 11th birthday.
I made Butter Beer,a dodgy hogwarts cake and managed to buy Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans,Chocolate Frogs (complete with the wizard card),Droobles Bubblegum,Crunchy Cockroach chocolates etc online (can try to find the site if you want)
Games wise,as we didn't have any other children here,it was easy going.Really simple things tbh.Made a Golden Snitch and had him racing around on his broom to catch it (you could easily do a broom race for the golden snitch),Gnome Tossing from one of the Harry Potter Games (paint some gnomes on paper, stick them on card, whizz around and throw to see who gets the furthest) and the easiest...wizard duels.
It was all incredibly simple,as would have to be given my sons disabilities anyway, but it was great fun and I'd imagine if there were many kids it would be brilliant!
If you got Bertie Botts Beans you could have a fun tasting game too!!!
To add to it I got castle interior stuff that you just pin on the wall, got a feathered headwig toy which I sat on the radiator while we were eating, and we dressed up...I even dyed my hair to be Nymphadora for himIf women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -

Or if you think they'll sit still long enough or maybe turn it into a sleepover you could do a potter marathon and watch all the films back to back you could still do all the potter themed snacks and make them stop for a banquet I love that idea, maybe serve the drinks from a big cauldron, maybe break it up with some games between the films and maybe rather than party bags a bath bomb from lush they have one called phoenix rising, its all glittery and the name makes me think of potter.
I love the idea of a potter party0
