confidence haircut - Essex

Hi all.
I am stuck in a haircut time warp. I never know what to do with it and so when I go to the hairdressers (wet cut only as cheapest), they simply cut it shorter in the same style.
I have no idea what suits me and they don't offer me any advice when asked.
Although its not particularly MSE, I am thinking of trying to find a v good hairdresser to give me a change of style and hopefully confidence.
Has anybody gone to a 'top' salon and paid silly money? Was it worth it?
Looking for a stylist in North Essex if any recommendations out there?
Have asked around but colleagues just visit local salons too.
Any guidance gratefully received, thanks

I've no advice concerning geography as I live in Leeds but I went to a very expensive salon (Vidal Sassoon) and was not impressed with what I got.

I found another salon based on someone's recommendation on here and have found hair heaven.

My hairdresser is a bit wacky which suits me and isn't afraid to really go for it. His style might put some people off as he doesn't really do 'just a trim' but I love him as he really goes to town on my hair (I wear it very short and spiky) and I leave looking great, if I do say so myself.

There's no way I'd tolerate a crap stylist. If you ask for advice they should ask you questions about preferred length, lifestyle. If you walk in and explain that you feel you're in a timewarp and that you don't know what suits you, then the stylist should come up with some alternatives.

You could try the Good Salon Guide for hairdressers in your area but my hairdressers isn't in it and they're really good so...:undecided http://www.goodsalonguide.co.uk/

Might be worth thinking how you want to look - do you like fashionable clothes or do you wear more 'classic' outfits? How active are you - a style which takes a while to style might not be good if you do a lot of swimming for example or lead a very busy life. Is your hair thick, fine, wavy etc. These are things to consider.

I'd recommend finding out what your face shape is by taking all your hair off your face and drawing round the image on a mirror using lipstick whilst looking at it. You can then google 'hairstyles for round faces' for example for ideas. I will say this though, lots of hair magazines use models with oval faces which can be a little dispiriting. A good hairdresser though should be able to style a cut to suit their client.

Finally, I'd say just go for it concerning your hair. If you have it cut off and you don't like it, so what?! It'll grow back. Be bold and get used to your new cut once you and your stylist have decided what to do. :)

I think it is very MSE to get a decent cut and some good advice- if you need something and it stops you overspending on other things to make-do (as in spending more on clothes or make up because your not feeling great about your hair) then its money well spent and getting good advice is useful because you can use it next time.

I don't have any suggestions for you as I'm in London but I would suggest asking others you know where they get their hair cut but also (and most importantly) who cuts it. You can have amazing stylists and not so great stylists within the same salon. Also don't be afraid to ask those that seem approachable you see around in shops for example (including assistants) it can feel very flattering for the person your asking as well as being useful advice for yourself. (Just make it clear your not after a clone cut!!)

Unfortunately an expensive cut doesn't always mean better. I once was given a gift of a cut at a very expensive salon - guy who owned it was on the telly regularly, has a range of his own products etc etc

I can honestly say that it was the worst haircut I have ever had (and it was in south east essex so be careful:D:eek:) . Best bet is to ask someone whose hair you like and which always looks good for a recommendation. Sadly trial and error is the only way

Having a wet cut will probably just get you the same style.

You need to ask for a restyle, which will entail a cut and blow dry, then maybe in between appointments just have a wet cut. Take a picture in of a style you like and ask if it is appropriate for your face shape.

I have a square face shape so I googled hairstyles for my face shape, then I printed off a photo and took it with me.

You don't get what you pay for unfortunately, stay out of Hoop in Clacton, they slaughtered a friends hair and charged her nearly £150 and that was with the senior stylist, I second the face shape idea above and also if there is a celeb that looks a bit like you see what they are doing for guidance - good luck:)
