Is this dodgy - mortgage consultant

I recently completed a form on money.co.uk regarding Mortgages, and received a call from James Carter, Financial Matters - Mortgage Consultant. To date I have spoken to him on the phone and by email - however today he sent me a form to get a Mortgage agreed in principle, however following sending the form back he asked for my Bank Account and Sort Code. Is this normal practice. I do not feel at all comfortable with this. Personally I do not see the need for this data unless he is a touch dodgy?

Even getting something agreed in principle? Blimey being a first time buyer is very daunting.

I will make him work for that information and ask him to tell me why this data is required.
  • We gave our mortgage broker bank details at this stage. It's normal.

Can you have a look for him online to see if they have a website etc?

Make him work for it? Did you not think to ask him rather than post on the forum? You may well have got your explanation earlier if you had

  • No need to make him work for it. Our Mortgage Adviser is really friendly and is extremely helpful in trying to sort out a potential mortgage for us at the moment.

I did ask him, but I also wanted another view. If I am concerned to the legitimacy of a request, being a dummy when it comes to the ins and outs of mortgages - why would I need ask other knowledgeable persons if this is standard practice.

I am deeply sorry if I have offended you, and I will refrain from posting questions which upset you so much, ever again.

I did an AIP with NatWest using MTE last week.

It asked for the borrowers' bank details.

I then submitted a full application and despite having no fees to pay, the system insists on debit/credit card details being input. Needless to say, I hadn't obtained them from the client as I didn't need them...

I won't make that mistake again!

I dont do mortgages over the phone, but i go and see clients, complete a factfind with them.
I then go off, source the deals ad come back and recommend which mortgages i think they shoud have. I then get the information i need (payslips, bank statements, bank details, ID etc) BEFORE i get an agreement in principle.

I tend to do the AIP and go straight on to do the application where you need the bank details.

I did that too!! New systems.... ;)

I must admit that most lenders AIP's don't request the applicants bank details, and I generally don't ask for them until after we have an AIP pass, ready to go on to the FMA but must remember this now!

As ACG said, I had all the documentation ready because I was doing the application at that time. The client buttonholed me with a "any chance of another £10k for a conservatory" as I was heading out the door... so I decided on an AIP first, to make sure.

The worst thing was the flipping card details though. How many lenders ask for card details for a fully fee-free remortgage product? Barmy, absolutely barmy. :p
