hello all
Have read the threads relating to deducting pension contributions from salary. I phoned the tax credits helpline a couple of days ago and was basically fobbed off saying it wasn't the right sort?? Having re read the threads I'm certain that I am right to deduct the amount, dh pays £30 a month into it.
My question is, will the amount be backdated? If so, how long for? I did mention the pension deduction about 2 yrs ago when renewing my claim by phone and was told I couldn't claim ( not the best at getting myself across sometimes :embarasse ) so will I beable to backdate it to when the tax credits came in?
I know its a long shot but they seem keen to make people pay back for errors years ago, shouldn't it be the same in return
Thanks for reading

i rang them yesterday regarding deducting pension for salary and was told i could do it...they never said it had to be a certqain pension i was told any pension contributions can be deducted
so i gave them the new figures which go back to january 2004 when we started paying pensions....
so i am backdating 3 years...
so you should get yours backdated, just give them your new annual salary and tell them it all changed coz you did not know about pension deductions !!
hope i been of help !!0 -
thankyou for your quick reply, did they ask you for previous years?
Wish me luck for tomorrow!!0 -
no i asked them if i can give figures going back to jan 2004 and was told yes, and i will receive new award notices (postman will be pleased) :rotfl:
just work out your figures and tell them !!
told the tax credit advisor i never knew you could do this, she said it is on the tax credits form but in small print0 -
georgeyoggy let me know how you get on today !! thank you0

Phoned this morning and I can take the pension contributions off :T
They have agreed to backdate to 2003 as hubby has always paid pension contributions :j
A quick tip for anyone else doing this, when phoning make sure you have all your figures to hand and have the new yearly figure ready to check with them.
e.g.
£20000.00 gross salary
- £ 500.00 pension contributions
£19500.00 new salary to declare
I didn't do this, I'd just worked out the amount of pension contributions my hubby had made so the phone call took quite a while as we had to go through al the figures as I hadn't worked the above out
The lady said I should recieve revised awards for all of the tax credits (since they began!)in the next few days, to check these carefully and that any money owed will be paid direct to me at the same time :j yay :j
i've worked out that we've paid £2000  in pension contributions so will have to wait and see what comes
thankyou to all the posters who have brought this to my attention :beer:0 -
The form actually TELLS you to put in the pension contributions since they will be disregarded!0

I told my friend this yesterday as she didn't realise it either so it can't be very clear on the form. I have always deducted it anyway, but was doubting myself until now!!! I have told my friend to ring them and see how far back they will go as she may get a refund!0

Question 5.3 on Page 7
Quite plainly written!0 -
georgeyoggy --- why did they tell you in the first place you could not deduct them ??
i thought you can deduct all pensions ??
good luck0 -
hiya

They said as my husbands didn't show up on the P60 that it was an employers contribution rather than his own. I checked with his employer and it was hubbys contribution, theirs is not listed on there, his are on all his wage slips.
shameless-about-money ... after we first applied back in 2003 when it started, we had the booklet, forms etc. but it wasn't very clear. I did ask again 2 yrs ago but they said I couldn't..I even rang the other day and was still fobbed off!
Haven't had the form as such to fill in since the first one as we've just had renewals. Lady said the only reason I could claim back is because its a bit unclear. I haven't had the new renewal yet, hopefully its in plain english this time!!
Now looking out for the postman with a ream of paper in his hand!! Will have to get my thinking glasses out this time!!
