Gumtree as opposed to eBay. First timer wanting some gen info...

I've only ever sold on eBay, but i've seen a few ads on TV about gumtree saying it's free.

I recently sold a stack of DVDs on eBay for £18. Once you took off the listing fee, the final value fee, the posting fee, paypals percentage, i was left with just under £10.

So does it operate like eBay, but without the fees? (if so, how do they make their money?)
How do you pay? Is it PayPal?
What about the seller/buyer protection? From experience, eBay's protection seems to be if you're a buyer you win, regardless.

Anything else you'd like to add?

The site is more or less free. The things they charge for are like bumming your listing to the top of the page (which you can overcome by re-listing the item).

It's not an ebay, more like an online Loot. You post items online, people contact you, they come to yours and usually pay cash.

    Ah right i see.

So it's really suited to considerable items/bargains then. For example - you wont be travelling great distances to buy an electric window switch for your car, but you might if you've bagged a TV worth £500 for a mere £100.

And with everything dealt in person, i'm guessing you're open to a few loony-tunes then.

    Might stick to eBay. lol.

just to add to the above

Gum tree is fine for certain goods, I have sold some art on there before now. It is supposed to be a face to face venue, so you agree to meet the person, or for them to come to you and pay cash. I usually list a few things a week, but actually sell maybe only one thing every few months, I tend to use Gumtree for large items that I cannot post, hence the framed and glazed pictures.

    read the site
its designed for face to face, cash deals
    its run by eBay
  • Sold my laptop on Gumtree in less than 24 hours as I didn't want to go through the pain of eBay buyers wanting something for nothing - no fees and no postage, I must have saved about £20 quid or more just in eBay/paypal fees alone for a £100 laptop!

It was such a pleasant transaction that I'll probably use it again before eBay, at least the buyer can see the item when they come to collect and a bit of bartering is always a good thing.

You make a very good point SOU!! I find that more & more people expect something for free. It's almost like ... how dare you charge postage!!
I advertise on a car forum first, for the obvious fee avoidance. Rules are that you need to stick a price on your item - no "make me an offer". Anyway, you can say £20 including postage, and postage may cost you approx £5, so you're only bagging £15. They often come in saying £10 including postage.

You may as well stick the item in the bin!

I have a PC monitor for sale, so i guess gumtree would be better as i don't fancy posting it out.
