janeawey - we are describing exactly the same children.
Zara - with all due respect you are confusing the issues. I am a highly competent and experienced special needs teacher and have trained teachers to teach special needs. The children I am talking about fully understand their actions and can make choices about their behaviour. I think also that this issue is side tracking the thread. I was not looking for advise about the behaviour of the children or how to deal with it. Although some valid points and useful have definately been made about dealing with actions and consequences. I am looking for advice re what was stated in my first post.

  • sorry to sidetrack prudent, back to the origional question, I think you do need advice from your union and maybe ACAS would be good to speak to they have a website and a helpline, I think if you have any more meetings with your management team you realy need to have an impartial observer there to witness I think, OFSTED would also be an option as they would probably not be impressed with lack of care for staff and proper sanctions for the children, the reason i suggested the police is because IMO the school is n ot dealing with this issue correctly and it needs to be brought out in the open and dealt with, the local education dept is another option to go to maybe speak to them, altough this does depend on whether you are an LEA school or independant as i am sure the LEA has guidelines on dealing with aggressive bahviour from children and also a policy about dealing with these incidents, however if your school is independant im not sure who you would go to then, Jane

I view this unsolicited visit and the subsequent tone as harrasment.Ensure you discuss this with your union health and safety rep.

The school is in private so no lea. The inspectors were in the school last year and gave it a dire report. They specifically questioned the way incidents are recorded and dealt with and noted staffing tensions. The report stated the school was often in chaos. The positive comments on the education side were on my class and it was recommended my strategies be used across the school. I was at the time looking for another job, and the school were advised by the inspectors to negotiate with me to keep me on.
  • I hope you have a copy of that report, it sounds like you are an excellent teacher of these very difficult children, I wonder..........if places are purchased at your school by other LEA's for their children would you be covered by their policys too? just a thought as I know a lot of very difficult children are placed out of the own LEA for this kind of highly specialised schooling, feel free to pm me if you want to chat or a bit of support, it is very difficult to understand what it is like working with these children uinless you have experienced it yourself.
