in Cutting tax
Just a quickie (I hope this is the right board). I've received an e-mail purporting to be from HMRC saying they have £980 waiting for me to claim. I haven't been a UK taxpayer for many years, so assume this is a scam. If it isn't a scam I obviously don't want to miss out on nearly a grand! Can anyone confirm that this is not a real e-mail.

Hi,
it's a scam, HMRC don't send emails about refunds.0 -

A wholly correct assumption :HMRC wrote:HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will never send notifications of a tax rebate by email, or ask you to disclose personal or payment information by email.
Do not visit the website contained within the email or disclose any personal or payment information. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Many thanks for your replies. I thought as much. I keep getting e-mails from banks about changes to my account - banks I don't even have accounts with!0

forward it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk then delete it.
I am no great fan of google but I have to admit that googleemail's spam/phishing filters are pretty good at catching this sort of thing. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
