and that is against the law!simson3325 wrote: »am i too old to get a job,
im 54yrs old and on the work programme, ive applied for 100s of jobs
but never had an interview, just rejection letters,my last rejection letter stated i was out of the companys age range, they were only setting 16 to 24 year olds on,they know from your cv from past jobs you have had,how old you are,
they do not know how old you are if you have a work history on the CV of no more than 10 years.0 -

CV goes back to employment starting 1974 (that job running to 1986), ie from school leaving age.
Well, if s/he's only using one CV and that's in a chronological format, that certainly won't help the applications.0 -
Have you considered approaching places like B and Q as they actively take on 'older' (and I use that term wisely as being in your 50s is NOT old) they are one company that appear to appreciate that sometimes experience is better than youth.
Good luck though, I know it is not easy out there.
You would have to be physically fit to work in one of these places and bear in mind that they will not make adjustments for you. It is the same with large retails shops and supermarkets. Save for J.L and their subsidiaries, but it near impossible to get a job with them now.

although just because someone is 54 does not mean they are infirm!
54 is no age. It is a review of your applications which will be needed here OP0 -
Sadly a lot of companies do discriminate against older people. It doesn't matter about laws about ageism, companies always go for the younger candidate if there is an equal skill set between two candidates.
I really feel for the older generation today, they've grew up and had the boom times when jobs were easy to get. I bet the OP can remember that you literally could walk out of one job and start a new one the following day.
Not only that but the way things have changed now, like this WP rubbish. People over the age of 45 should be exempted from these kinds of schemes. Its more demoralising for someone who has worked all their life to maybe finding themselves out of work and put on a scheme like this and talked down to by young people looking to get them into any old job so they can receive their bonus.
Some people are deluded if they think that employers don't syphon through CV's and applications and only considering the age of the candidate they wish to take on. I've seen it at first hand myself so knows it goes on.0 -

you it the nail on the head,
just what i thaught, and as for finding a job in the 70s and 80s you could pick and choose, and there were no cvs just a quick 5 min interview,0 -
@mattw7, age discrimination may go on with some employers but I would not presume that means it goes on in all employers. We recruit according to skills / ability and personality - the last 4 roles we filled were with people between 20 and 57. We still have an employee we took on when he was 66 - he's just celebrated his 71st birthday.
My mum was made redundant at 64 and got a new job within 2 weeks - which she is still doing.
simson, I would suggest you review your CV - you don't need to put every single job you've had since leaving school on it nor dates that you were at school. Make sure it focuses on the skills you have rather than just the jobs you did. Also ensure you consider different work to what you have done in the past - don't limit your search by saying "i'm a mechanic (for example) so I can only go for mechanic / car trade roles." Good luck0 -
My Dad (57) started working for me last year
It's only an occasional job, mind, but physically demanding and pretty stressful - he loved it! I found it amusing how seriously he took every instruction, so much more reliable than my younger employees. He's roped my Uncle into doing it too now. no one even looks at school qualifications and if you really had to put down something like 13 GCSE equivalentsOldernotwiser wrote: »They may well be able to work it out from your qualifications.0
