Claiming holidays due before retirement date

OK,

I'm due for retirement later in the year and as many will know it will be a big step in life to retire from work as it was a big step life to start work.

So my question is, I will have holidays left near the date of retirement and Company rules are these are to be applied for 14 days in advance. But I don't want any fuss etc when finishing (leave quietly) and I want to finish early using the days I have left. ie: 7 days before the big day.

So with the company ruling etc. do you think I could put my form in for holidays on leaving the company at the end of shift 7days before the day without waiting for consent without loosing anything and leave quietly.

If I put the application in as I should (14days), everyone will know as there is no confidentiality within the management.

  • Personally if it were me, and was not wanting to work again; I'd make sure I had 5 days leave that had been accrued and owing; and I'd go in on the last day that I wanted to work, see my manager as the shift ended and state that I wasn't feeling too good about retiring and am a bit wobbly so I want to take my remaining leave next week. I'd have my holiday form completed and with me to leave with him/her.

    It's easier for them to give you those 5 days than for you to go off sick.
    If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • Though 14 days may be the normal minimum request time, presumably people don't wait until the minimum time to put in their holiday requests - because (unless you are the type who goes for last minute bargains) holiday travel has to be booked well in advance of that and the company could say "no" to a request.

    If you put your holiday form in now for the final days you will have accrued at the point you retire it may not be noticed as being your final week - or that will have been forgotten by the time the holiday is due to start.

  • Its highly unlikely but I would expect you could be sued for breach of contact and any costs that are unable to be mitgated. Not impossible but highly unlikely.
