Tax relief on student loans

in Cutting tax
Can anyone confirm or deny a rumour I heard that student loan repayments attract tax relief? I contacted the Student Loans Company, and they said that they were indeed tax free, but my payroll department said not and refused to budge.
Any ideas?
If it's true, this could save me a fortune in tax!
