Advice on colouring roots at home - please!!

Hi all, I am fair but have blonde highlights. However after having a half head of foils just before Christmas, my roots are now horrendous (I had been recommended this hairdresser but I definitely won't be going back!!). Due to lack of finances I can't afford new foils for a few weeks but was hoping someone could recommend something I can use at home in the meantime.
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

I have highlighted blonde hair as well, with darker roots. As a temporary fix, I use hair mascara! L'Oreal do some different colours, among other makes. I have a gold-y mascara and a "Champagne" colour mascara, and they seem to do the trick. They wash out though, so need reapplying.
I buy them from Ebay, usually cost a couple of quid - see search here:

You have to search through to find the blonde-y ones though (although some of the coloured ones would distract any attention from your roots!)
I've never tried colouring the roots myself with at-home highlights (not brave enough), but I'm sure someone will be along soon to help out with that one......0 -
Why not look into a home hairdresser- a full color with mine costs £25. Probably half, if not more what you would pay in a salon.
I get my hair cut every fortnight, and coloured every 6 weeks. So every 6 weeks it will cost me £55 in hairdresser fees, and she is just as good as one you would pay for in a salon.
Look on home hairdresser (google it) and you will find one that covers your area.0 -
Meant to add- my hair is REALLY, REALLY thick so thats why I get it done so often.0

Surely the state of your roots has nothing to do with your hairdresser? It just means your hair has grown fairly quickly. My daughter needs her colour doing every 3 weeks to stay root free, your average hairdresser with probably recommend every 6 - 8 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows and how much regrowth you can cope with.
Unfortunately for us all, hairdressers do not possess a magic potion that colours new hair as it is growing.Starting weight 17st 4lb - weight now 15st 2lbs

I was thinking the same.
A hairdresser can't do anything about your roots looking good whilst the colour starts growing out.Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage.0 -
Are the highlights actually badly done? Are they really wide so roots look worse? Or just on the top layer of your hair like a sheet of colour? I would move your parting or where your hair in a style that makes them look not so bad and use either the hair mascara or a bit of batiste blonde dry shampoo down your parting. I find it makes my roots look less severe.Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0

Thanks all for your replies, think I will just have to fork out and have them done again, currently on the hunt for a good home hairdresser...I was tempted to do an all over colour at home but not brave enough to try that!!0

this one has always worked ok for me. best thing is to make sure it has a proper thick cap, thin ones are next to useless.

What about using a semi permanent or wash in wash out colour to blend in the roots and that way it will fade out gradually til you can get it done.0

Hi, Cant you just get a full head coverage where the dye is placed directly onto your root/scalp, without foils, as I believe its the time and effort taken to have foils applied which will bump the price up.
I have almost platinum hair and I have my roots done every four weeks, directly onto my scalp. It costs about £50, but bearing in mind that the blow dry costs about £25 on its own.
When I have been completely skint, I have told my hairdresser that I didn't want the blow dry as I was going swimming, which saved me a bit.0
