Thanks

Personally, I would say yes. As it's more powerful than OE.What are the benefits to using Thunderbird as opposed to OE?
I can only speak from personal experience. But my emails are set up like so:
Personal email
Messageboard email
Vendor email etc
There are infact more folders, but I shall stick to 3 here. Of course having so many email addresses means you get a fair amount of spam, or at least I used too. These days, since installing TB on my system, I turned on the junk mail controlls and 'trained' ie: marked using the 'Junk' button on the command bar which emails constituted spam and since then TB has put such mail in the apporpriate folder.
What made me move from OE to TB is quite simply, I grew tired of losing my .dbx files, or exporting them to a flash drive so I could keep updated on my laptop. Only to find that the import\export process didn't quite go according to plan and usually resulted in my losing emails. TB puts all your email in one folder here: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME HERE\Application Data\Thunderbird copy the folder found in that directry to a flash drive, then do the same in reverse to your laptop and it's done. No more losing .dbx files or email. Can gmail's be set up in TB?
It seems it can: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13285&topic=1556 though there's probably an 'addon' for googlemail somewhere.
I should probably add that, TB isn't as 'easy' to use as OE. There is a bit of a learning curve, however, if you value your email. It's worth the effort.
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
Thanks for both the replies. I will give it a go & see how I get on.
Thanks again

Personally, I love Thunderbird compared with Outlook.
It definitely deals with spam much more effectively, and I prefer the look and feel of TBird.
Also, you can try TBird out temporarily. When you install, it will ask you if you want to make TBird your default email client. You can just say 'no' and change it later if you decide you like it.
What you'll find is that all your messages from the Inbox of OE will remain in OE and a copy of them will appear in TBird (all marked as unread). If you want the email from your other folders, you'll have to manually transfer them and there's a handy little wizard that makes the process pretty simple. I basically ran both programs for a couple of weeks and then switched over to TBird.
The only thing I miss is the integrated calendar in Outlook - so I use Sunbird portable and Google calendar instead.0 -

Have you tried lightning, http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/ works pretty well.
To OP: you might also want to set the flag to leave messages on the server, then you can get them in both outlook express and thunderbird (for the unlikely event you decide to go back to oe that is) read the mail in thunderbird first (unless you set both programmes to leave messages on the server)0 -
Thanks - seems alot to look into. That's my afternoon mapped out for me...LOL

Hmm... have you considered Evolution?eryn_kathleen wrote:The only thing I miss is the integrated calendar in Outlook - so I use Sunbird portable and Google calendar instead.0 -
I use Thunderbird and really like what you can do with it. Just looking through all the available extensions makes you realise just how powerful it is.
I use Lightning and have been able to sync it with my google calendar. To do this all you have to do is find your google ical address and follow the guide here. That guide is for Sunbird but works for Lightning.
You can also sync google calendar with your ipod, if you're that way inclined!0 -
I have set up TB & tried to send emails ( i can receive them no problem), but I get the following message - 'SMTP server failed to connect. Please verify SMTP settings are correct.'
What do I need to do now? It works fine in OE.
Thanks
