making coasters or beer mats

I am wanting to make some personalised ones but unsure what type of paper to print on, or what to use.

Anyone else doing this that could help?

It doesn't look like it matters what paper you use - more that you coat them afterwards.

I'm recovering some old/ cheap coasters with vintage maps at the mo
Then covering twice with a decent layer of pva glue

these are made from a special sort of paper that absorbes liquid. what are they for? you could just print them out and laminate them?
