I've never been poor before but it's not as bad as I feared!

I don't think you're poor at all, being with your family, getting creative with your money and ideas. IMHO you are richer now than you were in that awful job:beer:

I honestly think the most important piece of advice I have gleaned from these forums is that there is no such thing as a ruined dessert - sunk or burnt cake, too strong/mild biscuits, whatever. A liberal application of custard will always save the day. I think you can apply this to most aspects of life, actually (well, not specifically custard...!)

Apologies if the language offended. I came to this board having fallen out with Tesco over some phone insurance they refused to pay because we claimed it 9 days after the event and being told by smug employee the claim needs to be made within 7 days. At that point we totally changed our shopping habits and every time I save money I feel smug Mr Tesco is no longer taking me for the mug I now feel I was for paying him those monthly sums. I've looked online for a definition of smug "Exhibiting or feeling great or offensive satisfaction with oneself or with one's situation" I am definitely meaning it in the great satisfaction rather than offensive satisfaction, but if it is offensive to Tesco then I am smug about that :D

I'm okay with smug! I feel smug when I go through the checkout at Tesco and I've paid £30 for the healthy ingredients to make a weeks worth of meals for four of us, while the person in front just paid £100 for a brimming trolly load of mostly cr*p. And s/he missed the BOGOF offer...

Felt particularly smug today looking carefully at ground near cashier and finding £1.20.
    I found a 2p piece today.
It was a bright, shiny one.
bent down to pick it up...
    it was frozen in ice/snow

so I 'chipped' it out with my shoeheel.

Roadkill looking VERY healthy already this year as I found a tenner in January!:T

  • This place has reminded me of an awful lot I already used but, because we were both in work, ignored. Now we are both unemployed and at home we are implementing things and hopefully doing better.

I feel smug cos I have learnt you can freeze pesto in an icecube tray (no more throwing moldy half jars away)

Can I just say I LOVE YOU! This tip is a GODSEND and one I cannot believe I didn't think of. :rotfl:

  • [FONT=Bitstream Charter, serif]I am grateful for learning here that the best way to freeze leftover cream is whipped, and open frozen in dollops then put into plastic bags. I had masses left over after Christmas, and am so pleased to get out a dollop or two to add to soups, gravies, casseroles etc. Not life changing, but very useful.

  • I've not been able to work for a couple of years due to my son's disablities and issues with his schooling.

He was the "ebay baby" and I've been pretty old style for years now, however there's such a world of difference between CHOOSING to be careful with cash and HAVING to scrimp that the old style forum has been a godsend. You all help me do this whether it be prepping for Xmas or stretching the grocery budget enough to afford new school shoes.

It's helped so much with enabling me to be content with what I have, and not be envious of those who have more cash to splash iykwim. If I get a bit down - this forum inspires me in that there are others out there trying to the same - be happy on less.

My son has also learnt the difference between want and need and is the sort of child who doesn't whine or moan in the supermarket or when he sees his friends with expensive bikes etc. He's grateful for what he does have and a really nice kid in that respect! (Other people comment so it's not just a mummy bindness thing).

He's able to make his own entertainment from crafty stuff etc and likes the simpler things in life too. Lots of kids now are growing up with this awful greed and sense of entitlement can can only lead to a miserable adulthood. Envy leads to all sorts of misery & he doesn't suffer from this at all.

Raising a kind human being who is able to be content with what he has instead of constantly hankering for more consumer tat is important to me. I think helping me with this goal is the single most important thing old style has done for me.
