Meant naff-all to me as a kid as well but it was Chinese children at that time. We got to say which were our favourite meals but had no say in when they were served and how often. Dunno why because the ones we were most fond of were the cheapest, except chicken which we only ever saw at Christmas. As a nipper I would have been happy with stovies every other night.

You utter git! You had to go & mention stovies didn't you....:p

Stovies are corned beef, potato and onion hash up here in Scotland, made to a sort of stew like consistancy and served with a big blob of HP sauce. You can make them with sausages too but they're not half as good. It's a great way to make a single tin of corned beef into a filling meal and they're wonderful after being out in the cold.

And yes, I'll take your lad for a couple of weeks. Hope he can do laundry and hoover? In return though you can take my 15 year old..... he can do laundry and hoover (and cook) and he'll eat anything and everything, but he'll also cost you a small fortune in hair conditioner and sports gear and you have to go and stand by a freezing rugby pitch for several hours per week.

I was just wondering whether any of you lovely people could help me out. I have slowly been trying to become more os and make my own bread and cook from scratch most of the time (apart from the odd meal from the chippy :D) . Even though I cook from scratch I still want to reduce my shopping even lower. This has lead me to think about trying to use frozen meat instead of fresh. Does anyone else do this? I was wondering whether it cooks and tastes the same. Does anyone know of any good things to try or anything I should avoid.

Thank you in advance, Vicky x

I can't taste thre difference, when I buy fresh meat and freeze it (we live miles out, so I shop once a week, and bulk buy meat once a month). Your post makes me wonder why I've never just bought it frozen, actually - apart from the fact I like to use our local butcher, supermarket meat isn't as nice tasting to me. In fact, that would be the way I'd do it - bulk buy fresh from a good butcher and freeze at that point, if flavour's important to you.
Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!
  • I use a lot of chicken, and currently use frozen, cheapest chicken breast from A!d!. I know it is not organic free range etc. But I can afford it. Tastes fine in curry etc. I used to but fresh and then freeze it, but this is cheaper.

I get frozen mince/diced beef and just thaw it out before cooking, no problem at all and it seems to contain less fat too.

  • I have frozen meat but never get on with frozen mince, just always seems to turn to mush

Frozen meat is invariably a bit cheaper. We freeze everything anyway, and take it out in the morning for the evening, if that makes sense.
Have a look on My Supermarket for the costs of what you buy now and what you hope to switch to.
Then it's just a matter of whether you are happy with the switch, really.

    Hi Vicky,

We have a recent thread on buying frozen meat which may help so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.
