E-petition Displaying fuel duty (tax) on receipts

We'd all love the government to cut fuel duty, but I think they are unlikely to budge immediately on that front.

However, I do think, as the VAT amount is displayed on receipts, so should the amount of fuel duty, separate from what the petrol station is charging for the unit price of fuel.

I would hope this would lead to a greater awareness of the issue and less ignorance of exactly how much we are paying every time we visit the pump. I think this first step is a more realistic prospect of being actioned.

If you would like to sign the e-petition, it is on the Government epetitions.direct.gov.uk website, petition 28800 (apologies, I am unable to provide a link as a new user on this forum)

Well, I agree with your opinion, but I am afraid it will be a cold day in hell before any government would do that. Because then people will realise that what they are buying and paying at the pump is mostly tax, with a little bit of fuel added.

No thanks, would probably cost a lot of money for the retailers to set up.....guess who would foot that bill.

I do understand your point, perhaps there is someone here who has first hand knowledge of the cost involved though, in amending the code / calculation on receipt machines?

I would expect a small change to information on a receipt to be negligible in cost though, if nothing. Added to that, I can't see that retailers would be massively against the change, considering it would show more clearly what the price they have set is and what it is that the taxpayer forks out.

It's not just the receipt though is it?

I don't even see the point.....as things stand VAT is on the receipt. How many people even look at it before binning it.....or keeping it for expenses claims.

TBH I think most people know the rough % of what goes where, after every budget we see these pie charts showing how your litre of fuel is divi'd up......most people don't care.

I believe this is why the issue needs to be raised. The current government has stated a desire for more openness about various figures and money matters. There is another petition currently demanding a drop in fuel prices, which I think is like shouting at a brick rule. But where No 10 has indicated a need for more transparency, I believe this stands more a chance of success than just flat out demanding a reduction in fuel.

I would be interested to know how many people on this forum, without looking it up, know the exact % in fuel duty they pay and what it costs them every time every they go to the pump.

Maybe you would......but also ask how many actually care.

Can you explain actually what you are trying to achieve out of this?

How far do you go with this......alchohol/tobacco duty printed on receipts?

    Awareness. Clarity. Transparency.
Duty on Tabacco and Alcohol too? Good idea. Perhaps you should start your own petition. I'll be limiting this to fuel for the time being though. Thanks for the suggestions!

Maybe you're not giving people enough credit for being aware but apathetic. In fact last few times I've filled up people are saying bin the receipt.

Well if this ever happens and I'm charged more I'll know who to blame.

Indeed! You'll even have the figures broken down for you to aid in your blame dispensing.
