Self Employment

My son has just started a new job. He has been there a couple of months, and is a bit confused about his status. He was told he would receive minimum wage, then his boss put some money in his account for a month lying on, said he would not get holiday or sick pay so paid him a small amount for December as he had been on holiday. He now says he wants him to register as self-employed! He's only 22 and has had no pay slip or tax or NI paid - is this legal?

You cannot pick and choose if you are self employed or an employee. The working relationship defines it and whilst you can word contracts to make it appear as self employed HMRC has its own way of testing this and will decide what they believe the truth to be.
Evidently it sounds rather dodgy as it is very rare that an employee can legitimately become self employed and then continue working for their former employer in the same capacity0 -
This is a new job he has just started and not with a former employer. Not sure what you mean by that. He has not been given a contract of employment.0
