Do recruitment agents/consultants get anything for registering new clients?

Hello all.
I'm wondering if someone might able to fill me in how the recruitment area works.
I'm curious to know if they actually get anything out of registering you as a client, or by having your CV/details?
I've had a bit of interaction with recruitment agencies since I've been applying through jobs listed with agencies and one key theme I've noticed is that they usually phone you up after you've sent an application by email; merely to check details which are clearly evident on your CV, and don't even discuss the job at hand. I'm referring to where you worked, what the job title was, and other details that are all clear to see on an application. So I was curious to know if by registering you, or possessing your details, do they gain out of it?
I don't really want this to turn into a discussion about the use and efficiency of agencies/recruiters, it is just something that has puzzled me for a while now.

They're just verifying your details to double check they're bona fide and also perhaps doing a bit of fishing of who to cold call at a place you once worked to see if they are looking for people.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

I don't think the staff get a bonus as such, but assume you were an employer for this. You need some new staff and so get two agencies in to try and win the business from you, they both want the same rates for putting staff your way and all terms and conditions are equal.
Agency X says they have 3,000 people looking for work across a range of professions. Agency Y say they have 10,000 people, ranging from the people who just want a temp manual labour job and would be very happy with minimum wage, right through to high level managers and almost everything in between.

I had the misfortune of working as a recruitment consultant for three months after my one year contract in my previous job ended - I took the role rather than sign on.
I left because I disagreed with their general practices. We never got a bonus for signing people up - the commission came from placing a candidate in a job role.
One of our key targets was to register a certain number of people each week.....0 -
From the businesses perspective it wants to be able to tell clients about how big its pool of candidates are that are current and up to date. As such it will incentivise its staff to get more names on the books so that pool gets bigger.
How rewards are done will vary between companies, some it will be a KPI/ objective and so indirectly form part of any bonus scheme they may have. With others there are sometimes junior staff who only do the initial prescreening and getting people to agree to speak to a consultant and they can be paid commissions directly for getting sign ups and/ or a share of the agents commission for placing them.0 -
someone I know works at one and they told me. It makes for a better data base of potential candidates. Why do they continue to register people and want to know who else you are with if there is nothing in it for them?on what basis do you say this?
I ask as it makes no sense to pay bonuses on sign ups, that is completely open to abuse and does not generate revenues for the agency...!0 -
so i start work at an agency tomorrow.
to get a better bonus in my paycheck i sign up all my immediate family, all 30 of em, in week one (not all trackable, different surnames due to marriage and whatever)
week 2 - having ran out of immediate relatives with CVs i start to make them up and average 5 a day say to make my "bonus"
.......................................doesnt make any commercial sense to me, and WIDe open to simple abuse.
If an agent needs a better database, they can simply advertise for one, most have way more candidates than they will ever place.
they register people as it is a simple numbers game - the more people IN the database, the more likely they will find the one that fits the bill and can start on due date. It is the same with most sales - drive enough volume and you will convert enough into sales to pay the bills. Plus, if you havent registered them, your competitors will have done - again basic sales management...0
