HELP! Mold on wooden blinds

Me and My partner have recently moved into a flat which was partially furbished, and as its a ground floor flat, having the wooden blinds on the windows was a must (especially as our bedroom looks out onto a pavement, from double doors)

When we were cleaning the other day, we noticed that at the bottom of the blinds, there is a large amount of mold on the blinds. It is mainly at the bottom of the blinds, and only in the bedroom (there are a similar set in the front room which are fine) We have just put in curtains, mainly to keep out extra light and cold, as the door frames are aluminium and collect condensation well! We want to clean the mold off, and importantly, attempt to stop it from coming back, as we dont want it collecting on the bottom of the curtains. Nothing we have tried so far has been successful in getting rid of it, and i'm looking for some advice from anyone who knows how best to tackle this.

Anyones help would be greatly appreciated in this unpleasant and unhygienic matter :D

It's not very OS but Dettox Mould and Mildew (it stinks) does the trick. Its active ingredient is sodium hypochlorite which is also in Milton sterilizing fluid so you could try that.
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.
  • Thanks Bizz, OS? Not sure what that means? Is it okay to put it on whilst the blinds are up, cos i dont fancy taking them all down!? Is it put on with a cloth?

Yes, leave them up. I just squirted ours in situ. Having said that, also did vast expanse of wall too! House stunk like a swimming pool for ages!

    Hello
We have some bamboo roller blinds (just the cheap sort from argos) in our conservatory. I tend to leave one in the corner down all summer and have only just got round to rolling it up! I noticed that it is COVERED in mould (on the back otherwise I would have noticed!) and the window frame behind it was black :(

I have cleaned the frame but am at a loss to know what to do with the blind. Do any of you know if these can be cleaned? Any suggestions what with or am I going to have to bin it? I am worried that I won't be able to clean it thoroughly enough IYKWIM ?

It's all a bit strange really as we don't have condensation and I don't know what can have happened to cause this.

It's really upset me actually, just a case of it happening on the wrong day - I've had my leg in a cast for 4 weeks (3 more to go) and obviously haven't been doing any housework. This is not normal for me and it's been driving me nuts anyway so this is the final straw :(

Anyway, sorry for the moan - advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Claire

I would try a tea-tree oil solution - many of the products sold as mould removers contain bleach, which would affect the bamboo, but tea-tree is pretty effective at killing mould and I don't think it would damage the wood. You could either make up the solution and spray/leave/wipe, or mix the tea-tree oil into water in a bathtub and sort of drape the blind into the bath to sit and soak for a while.

Boo to the leg-in-cast - that sounds really frustrating :-(

Thanks - DH tried this but because the bamboo is so tightly woven together we think it will be impossible to clean properly. DH did also point out that as a replacement would only be £6.99 he would rather replace than faf around .. fair comment, I can't really be bothered to argue :)

Sometimes that's the only way! AT least you stopped and thought about it rather than just be pure wasteful and automatically throw it out :)
