Confused About Work & Health.

So Confused, can anyone give me advice.

My work is in the Childcare Sector but I left my last job volunterally as I was working 5 days a week, working 11 hours a day plus 2 & half hours getting ready, travelling each day by public transport.I left as I started to suffer from bad headaches/sinus pain/exhaustion which interfered with my work. Also leaving my last job was to have some Time Out.
I didnt sign on as I did not think you could if you had left your last job voluntarally.Do you know if this is right/wrong?
Ive been out of work now for the past 1-2 years through still suffering from headaches/sinus problems.Im under the E.N.T at hospital.Whilst out of employed work I decided to become Self Employed doing a Home Based job as the work is to do whatever hours I want whenever I want but the pay is by commision which is very little indeed (not enough atall to live on).
I do want to go back into work but I feel that I could only do part time/couple of hours a day.But Im still sufering from my health problems so Im not going to be very reliable in a job am I?
Do you have any advice/answers to knowing if would be able to claim anything of the following:
1.Jobseekers
2.Incapacity Benefit whilst being Self Employed
3.Incapacity Benefit on its own.
4.Do you know if Im only allowed to claim Incapacity Benefit only if Ive been diagnosed with something?
5.My doctor said he would write a letter to the Job Centre if asked.Would this be enough to claim?

Thankyou for your time.

  • If I was you I would go to see either the Jobcentre or your local Citizans Advice Bureau and ask them what you can or cannot claim

Yes you would get Incapacity Benefit whilst self-employed - I do - provided that your NI contributions have been sufficient and up-to-date.

Technically, being self-employed, you cannot claim JSA. You would have to have a sick noted from your GP to get IB.

You would then be entitled to IB if you qualify plus Council Tax Benefit, etc.
  • Thankyou Shameless-about-money

Thanks for getting back to me.Not sure if you missed some questions or you just did not know answers to,so I hope you dont mind me asking again.

Would you mind letting me know, thats if you do know,if I would I have to:

1.Get a Doctors Letter to back me up for claiming Incapacity whilst being Self Employed?

2.Am I allowed to do my Self Employed work on the days that Im not suffering from my health?

3.Can still claim if I left work voluntarily & have been out of work for the past 1-2 years? Would I lose the past 1-2 benefits?

4.Can still claim if Ive not yet been diagnosed with anything from the Hospital?

    Thanks again for your time.

    To answer your questions -

    1. You have to have a sick note from your GP, not a letter, a sick note.

    2. Possibly - they may allow you to do "permitted work" and earn up to £87 per week.

    3. I don't know the answer to this one, sorry!

    4. You don't need a diagnosis from the hospital, you only need a sick note from your GP - they usually give you one for 1 month, then for 3 months, then for 6 months.

Get a sick note from your GP, then go to the Job Centre and see what they say.

The warning symbol is so bad posts can be reported and then deleted - you'll note it's not against your own posts as you can't report yourself.
  • oh yeah.Thanks.
