Please help me people...........here's the story..............
I worked for 13 years within a public company where my wages were paid into the bank after deductions and i paid NI and will recieve a pension when it matures.
Then for 13 year i went self-employed with a gang of builders and never paid NI,when i started nobody paid it and i was told 'we are self-employed and dont need to pay it'.
For the past 3 years i have been in Europe and not living/working in UK.
Anyway................... ...i am coming back to england and hope to start work in the public sector and will need to complete a P60? form when i start work. But my question is...........what about the national insurance what i believe should have been paid, will the arrears come to light. Will it be backdated,if so for how many years?
Please advise me.

No you will complete a P46
If you were self employed how did you pay tax?
The arrears may come to light (someone else can tell you no doubt) but you are just going to be 13 years short so therefore will not get a full state pension0 -
Thankyou for your reply,
Yes i paid tax,i had an accountant whom did my accounts yearly for a fee.
Apparently i never paid class 2 national insurance for the 13 years i was self-employed.
So i am worried about both being in trouble and a huge debt.
Though surely the debt can only be taken back 6 years?,3 of which i was not working or in UK.
Such a mess.0 -
As long as you paid your tax everything is okay, thee will be no debt.
The repercussions of you not paying NI impacts on any benefits you would want to claim ie sick pay etc.
As self employed I believe you should have paid 2 lots of contrbutions, but i cant remember which ones.
The long term impact is that it could impact on your state pension, to get a state pension, you have to have 30 years contributions.
If you have that by the time you are at retirement age then you will get a full state pension, so stop worryingmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Your accountant seems a bit dubious if he prepared your accounts every year but never suggested (or insisted) that you should be paying NI.0

I agree about the accountant.
When my OH was self employed he paid 1 lot of NI monthly and the other lot with his year ly tax paid.
But if ou have paid tax, there is no debt. As the other poster said, when you start on a job on PAYE you should complete a
P46 which your new employer should have or can be dowloaded from the internet.
I would also suggest you contact the DWPand get a pension forecast, so you can work out whether you can get a full state pension.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
