Buying laptop, advice needed please..

Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

I'm looking at getting a Dell Inspiron notebook with the following config:

AMD Turion 64x2
15.4 Screen
1024 MB RAM
60 GB Hard disk
Internal DVD RW
ATI Radeon Express 256MB Hypermemory

Comes in at around £507.00 including VAT and delivery is this a good price or can someone tell me where else I can go?

  • Told by techie mate to AVOID DELL !!!

I bought an ACER - £349 from Comet (£50 off)
    15.4" widescreeen,80GB,dvd re-writer

Got on 3 months int free too
  • Looked at the one at play thanks for that bit too much over my budget this Dell was already a little over!!

The one on play comes with Windows Media centre not used that whats it like?

I've used Dell for years laptop wise not had any problems just been out of the techie loop for a year or 2.

Will check out comet though, was the £50 off a voucher or just general sale?
  • Hi.
I bought the Dell Inspiron 1501 for my Husband for Christmas (funny, as its me sat typing this on it now!!!) and its great!
We are both well impressed with everything about it!
Think the spec is pretty much as you listed. (apart from we got 80gb).
Only thing I could say is, I only plumped for the 90day warranty (as 12 month is already included), and as this came to an end, I received a phone call to say did I want the 3 year on site fully inclusive service for £60!
Seems better than paying more at the beginning!
    Good Luck!

could be worth you looking at dixons and currys refurbished lappys , some good toshiba ones on there , all have 12 months gaurantee , and there is a 5% code on hotdeals site at present , and another 3% if you go through quidco . , their cheap own brand are ok well speced bits of kit , if not to far from a power supply (approx 1-2 hr batteries)and you look after them (not very hard wearing) my daughter has a cheap one and has performed ok for general web surfing etc check this out http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0583776344.1171564799@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdkaddkeiefmeicflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&show_all=true&category_oid=-27411&page=ProductList&fm=1&sm=0&tm=4
  • We always buy Dell, have been told by a techie to always get Dell, maybe the other techie had a bad experience! Seriously though, we have now bought 6 Dells, three desktops for our office, two desktops and one laptop for home. We have NEVER had any trouble with them, I had a key come off my laptop (courtesy of my 19 year old son) and they sent full instructions to repair. Interestingly we were recommended to Dell by an ex engineer of theirs, so they must be good as he would know all the problems.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

We have five dells at home. Only one with any problems was Dd2's but she also has problems with cameras and phones and Tv's so i suspect it's her fault. Remember to go through quidco to dell too.

I'm a techie and I've got 2 Dell notebooks lol the newest one just happens to be the same spec as the OP but mine came in at £597. I did get the trulife screen and the 9 cell battery which might account for the price difference.
It's a great machine, the first thing I did was reinstalled Windows to get rid of all the crap that Dell put on it and it fair zooms along :)
