USB External FDD Won't Play
Comments

Hi all,
An update, and a solution...
I tried the usb cable solution mentioned above, but unfortunately it wasn't the problem (I actually had a USB Y-Lead already, but needed an adapter to be able to use it with my FDD, so only about £1-20 lost, so no great upset here).
However, after yet more Googling I found a fix that works, and here it is:
"There IS a fix for USB devices that won’t work and keep flashing driver install dialogs that result in ‘driver not found’. In Device Manager right click the device or the unknown devices to update drivers, point to ‘C:\Windows\winsxs’ instead of windows/inf or windows/system32, this is where Vista stores it’s legacy DLL files and frameworks, Vista will warn that the driver isn’t signed, install anyway, it’s perfectly safe, it will install the malfunctioning device and install all drivers associated with the deviceID".
I now have a working USB external FDD with my Acer Laptop at last; hopefully others may find this fix useful in the future.
