Uniform Tax

Hello! After getting the email regarding uniform tax I was delighted to have a change of tax code through the post giving me £60, bonus! (Although a cheque would have been nicer!)

Anyway, I'd like to help my mum put in a claim, she worked part time for the first year, can she still claim? she also receives £22 per month working tax credits, again will this stop her from being able to claim? She has worn a company provided uniform for the last 7 years which she has washed and maintained herself. Thank you!

You don't get £60, you get tax relief on £60 so 20% of £60 which is £12. Unless of course your claim was for more than one year.

As jem says - she can claim. But only back to 06-07 ...... as 05-06 expires tomorrow (31st Jan)

  • Ah of course, I didn't think of that, I just saw a +£60 and presumed if was £60! what a numpty!

I wonder why they have done it that way and if I will receive the last four years that I claimed for as well. Do they normally do the previous years by cheque and the current year by changing the tax code? I thought it was odd that I didn't receive a letter regarding the reclaim and just a change of tax code.

It varies. Various work colleages of mine have been receiving refunds after claiming for Professional Subs. Some have had refunds for the previous years by cheque and some have had refunds via their tax code.

What tax code have you been given?

If it's £60 for 10-11 then some calculations will be on the way re earlier years? One I prepared earlier :

  • My new tax code is 753L until April.

I'm now even more confused! Today I have received a cheque for £44.40 (not complaining, just don't understand the information included with it) it lists my income from 2010-11 and underneath it says 'earlier years adjustment' £171. Then below it says 'Deductions from income' Flat rate job expenses £60...Is this the other 4 years of uniform tax? totally confused. I can write down exact figures if needed!?

Is this the other 4 years of uniform tax?

    Indeed. A quick and dirty calculation is 3 years at £60 + one year (pre 08-09) at £40. Total of £220 @ 20% = £44

One of the years will be at 22% - hence the slight discrepancy?

If you look at the final year P800 ..... note 16 gives you the composite refund. The 'adjustments' are the earlier year refunds brought forward.

  • A friend of mine works for a well done dept store and has to wear a uniform. He has never claimed for cleaning etc please can you advise what he needs to do to submit a claim and he has been there about 6 years. Do you know how many years he can claim back.

    With thanks

As post #3 .......... back to 06-07 (inc). But that year expires 31st March, so needs to be fairly quick.
