I think it would be worse, and inaccurate, What people earn is not limited to their salary.

That's for sure, my salary is about 40% of my overall income.

Well, that's right. My old Company used to let us know what our 'equivalent' gross salary was after all the bits and pieces that were offered by the Company. I still feel that there should have been transparency by the Company in showing salaries. Salary bands were known and you would know which band someone was in, so had a good idea - so why not reveal the whole thing.

My 'equivalent' package was over £30,000, but in reality I was taking home about £9,600 pa as I contributed huge amounts to ACs, and took all the SAYE options, etc.

    le on the internet?

Do you think this would mean fairer pay? less pay? happier people, more annoyed people?

I think it would help in some ways. although, I think the fact you can see house prices on the internet has been bad generally.

What do you think - a huge database, everyone on it, with the salary details available to all?

They should at least do that for benefits, that would cut down on fraud very quickly indeed.

I think its a good for peoples's salaries to be open knowledge. And I think in the long run things would work out much fairer as companies would have to justify things if there were blatant discrepancies.

I'd welcome it. Would also want to include assets.
Leftwing red faces all round me thinks. Uber down with the people personas such as that which Mark Lewis and Billy Bragg have so carefuly cultivated, being shown to be worth millions would be a tad awkward me thinks.

Lets find out who the real fat cats are, aye Tony Benn, Ben Elton, Lenny Henry, Janet St Porter, Shirley Williams, Sting, Geldoff and all the others that rail against fatcattery.

Why would encouraging envy be good for society?

This is just, well silly. Yes, people would shout about fat cats, but what would really happen is that people who were asset ruch due to saving all their life would be targeted by the local criminal element. Look at all the murders and assualt on OAPs now, that would only increase.

Semms to me it is only those who have no interest in working hard or saving hard that seem to begrudge others the fruits of their labours.

It would make life worse. Because people just can't accept others earning more than them :D

Having said so, it is not difficult to guess someone's income from the profession. Each profession has some fairly well defined ranges (except few cases). One can easily look up standard salaries from job sites etc.

Remember, it is important to be happy in life. Many people earn a lot but they are unhappy.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
