Newbie questions for LinkedIn

I'm thinking of changing jobs and wanted to use LinkedIn as I know enough about it to know that it would be a useful tool. However, I'm slightly confused about a specific aspect.
If I add my current employer and colleagues as connections to my profile, will they be able to tell from my profile that I am looking for a new job?
I would like to sell myself as much as possible but I want to avoid people from my current employment knowing that I am looking. If I do not link my account to my current employer then I'd be selling myself short for companies that I may potentially join.
Also, if I upload my CV to LinkedIn, will this be visible to all my contacts or will people need to explicitly request permission to see this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Hi,
You're probably better have a play around with the privacy settings as you can adjust the controls as to who can see what and turn on/off your activity broadcasts.
Your CV will just import in and show as an online profile and almost everyone has one so it won't look too obvious. If you then join groups relating to the role you currently do then you have a legitimate work reason for being on it.
Hope this helps,

I get enough job offers from Linked-in without having to put my CV on there. I just listed my employment history, and keep getting contacted about potential jobs, most of which I just ignore or decline.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
I assumed uploading my CV would mean that the CV file would be freely downloadable by anyone visiting my profile. From the comments here, it seems like information from the CV is copied out into the actual LinkedIn profile instead. Is this correct or have I got things completely wrong? I don't want to test something out in fear that it'd send out a broadcast, email or some other notification with information that I cannot undo.
I don't think all aspects of my CV are appropriate to put on LinkedIn. All the skills etc are fine but I've got areas in my CV that talk about specific projects I've done and my roles on those projects. Do people put that kind of information on their LinkedIn profile? That seems a bit to public for my liking so I may leave that off.0 -
To the best of my knowledge there is no CV upload? Having looked at my profile I see no option to do so, if you can I strongly suspect it is only as an efficient way of populating your profile. Certainly never seen any profile with a CV available for download other than a copy of the profile.
Looking at BAs and PMs profiles, you will often see mention of projects but they are in generality in terms (eg new product launch generating multi million pound profit) rather than explicit and potentially confidential details.
There is a series of "what type of contact do you want" on profiles and you could deselect job offers but it doesnt tend to stop agents approaching but on the flip side never heard of any sensible employer have any issues with people having a profile or having interested in job offers on it.
You would have to be fairly daft to think all of you employees want to stay for life and for anything but the most basic role I'd question anyone who doesnt have the drive or motivation of wanting to move up (which we all knows sometimes moving out)0 -

Thanks for that, what you say makes a lot of sense and I guess that eases some of my concern. The CV upload feature may be something only offered to those who have limited information on their profile. Because I have a new account, mine is only 40% complete. When I click on Edit Profile, I have an option for 'Import your resume' as seen in this image:
