Council tax for a house with 3 students and 1 non-student

I am currently a final year student studying in York. Next year I have decided to stay in York and am living with my 3 current house mates who will all remain as students. I realise that I will have to pay some council tax as I am no longer a student however it is not clear what percentage of the normal council tax rate I will have to pay for a house with 3 students and 1 non-student. The house we are renting next year is within the B band for council tax. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. :)

You will pay 75% of the amount for a Band B dwelling. As the only person liable to pay CT you will get 25% single person discount.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

The three students are disregarded for CT so there will only be one eligible CT payer in the house, which means the 25% single occupancy discount will be applicable. So you will have to pay 75% of the full CT, unless you can persuade your housemates to share the cost with you. Band B is currently £1055.83, assuming you are in the City of York council area, which means your bill will be around £790.

The signs are that the council will put the CT bill up by about 3.4% next year, so add that on to the figures given by agrinnall
  • Thanks for all the help. :D
