Any ideas for a dodgey oven?

As I may have mentioned elsewhere my oldest DD21, is in Colombia doing 6 mos volunteer work teaching ballet in an orphanage. Chatting with her the other night she told me she really misses baking, she's very good at it - I taught her what I knew at about 12/13 and by the time she was 16 she'd overtaken my abilities. Trouble is in Colombia ovens are quite rare. There is a gas oven in the apartment she is staying in with other volunteers but she says when she's attempted to bake it just burns everything on the bottom and the tops stays raw, the oven itself doesn't seem to get hot. I wondered if any of you had any ideas to remedy the problem.

I lived for a while somewhere where this was the problem!
I solved it mostly by using a slow cooker & a Remoska!
But when I did need to use the oven, I used it on a medium-to-low heat and heated it for about 30 mins. before putting anything in it (really!)
