CELTA course and jobs

Hello. I am interested to hear from anyone who has done the CELTA course and now working as a teacher. Are there many job openings in the UK or is it really geared up for teaching overseas? Is it possible to get regular work or is it mostly summer jobs? Any info would be appreciated

Hi there,

I'm CELTA qualified with experience teaching in Vietnam, Portugal and Poland.

If you want to work in the UK you will need to have a CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL... BUT what with all the cuts in further education, the jobs are few and far between. Add to this the fact the Government has made it harder for foreign students to study in the UK and really the opportunities for inexperienced teachers are vanishing. To add insult to injury the few jobs I've seen are asking for a first degree, a CELTA and at least a year's experience for which they are offering little above minimum wage!

Of course there are a number of summer school jobs offering work from 2-8 weeks between the end and June and mid-August. Be advised that they are starting to hire now and by March/April the good jobs will have gone. You may also find two-week jobs at Winter and Easter camps although there are fewer of these available.
