Government gateway login ??

I had forgotten the problems I had with this last year !!

It wants a user id and password - I just cannot remember what this involves - I would guess the password will be the one I ake up and use myself , but what or where is my user ID? I can find nothing obvious on any paperwork - is it just a number, and how many , or letters as well ?

Last year I was sent a 12 digit activation code - letters and numbers , and kept that and assumed it was the user id for this year , but it rejects it.

I have just entered the Government Gateway using my user ID which consists of 12 characters which is a mixture of letters and numbers and, on the ID card I was sent the letters are in normal print and the numbers are in bold. Mind you, that didn’t stop me putting in a 1 when it should have been an I on my first attempt.
The password was one I had made up myself.
I actually registered on the Government Gateway in 2006 and today is the first time I have logged in since then but it still works. If you are having trouble you might want check carefully the obvious candidates, the letter O or the number zero or like me, the letter I or the number 1.

used my 10 digit number to obtain a 12 digit number from tax website and managed to login. Chuffed !!!
